Best Type of Kitchen Flooring

Here at Mayfair Kitchens, our vast experience in providing the finest kitchens in Cheshire and beyond has seen us gain some valuable insights. One of these insights is what we would recommend as the best type of flooring for your kitchen. We’ve complied a list of what we believe to be the most prominent types of flooring, for each given kitchen design…

Hardwood Wood

Hardwood flooring is often considered to be the ultimate flooring choice within the market and never seems to go out of style.

Also popular throughout the house hardwood flooring can create a seamless flooring affect throughout the home if the same material is used. Hardwood also benefits from lasting for long periods of time and when the wood begins to look tired and worn you paint, stain or even refinish your floor to bring back a burst of life to it and make it look as good as new.

When considering Hardwood for your home its important to consider the two different types of Hardwood:

Engineered Hardwood

Engineered hardwood is created by the layering hardwood on top of each other in a cross-grain arrangement. It is typically used when a concrete sub floor is present within the home. Generally engineered hardwood copes with damp and wet conditions far better than its solid wood counter part and it is often very difficult to actually tell the difference.

Solid Hardwood

Created from single pieces of wood and is the obvious choice for wood enthusiasts. When purchasing hardwood you have the choice of purchasing either finished or unfinished, allowing more flexibility with how you want your home to be.

The disadvantages to solid wood include the restriction of installations in damp conditions. It cannot be installed in wet or damp conditions so bear that in mind when considering solid hardwood.

Further more when deciding what Hardwood flooring you want it is also important to consider several factors including colour, species, texture and width to ensure you get the correct flooring to suit the feel and look of your home.

Bamboo

One of the hottest trends in the Kitchen and flooring industries currently, Bamboo offers a style and durability to the kitchen that is also environmentally friendly. Bamboo although technically type of grass gas proven to be tougher than a lot hardwoods that are often found in the kitchen and it comes in several variations much like hardwood, so you can pick the perfect floor for your kitchen.

The lifespan of Bamboo is also considered to be long lasting. Furthermore Cork is fairly comfortable to stand on for long periods of time unlike its hardwood counterpart. Although Bamboo is prone to damage such as scratching and denting from heavy objects and pets. The biggest issues with Bamboo is an under layer must be present when installing over concrete due to Bamboo being highly susceptible to moisture.

Cork

Cork is not the most popular type of flooring available in the current market. It does have several benefits when used in a kitchen. These include a natural resistance to water, heat and mould. Additionally Cork is also very soft and springy so it makes standing and cooking in the kitchen for long periods of time far more comfortable and if you drop a breakable item the odds of it are considerably reduced when you have a Cork floor compared to other flooring types.

Although durable does have some issues including fading and unevenness in high traffic areas such as in front of the range and in areas of direct sunlight.

Laminate

Often the cheaper alternative to Hardwood flooring, laminate flooring is a multi-layered material that has been fused together and contains a high-resolution image on the surface of the flooring.

Traditionally flooring enthusiasts have looked down laminate on, but as of recently this has changed. This is largely due to the high quality levels that are now present within the laminate flooring sector.

It is now often for people to not be able to tell the difference real wood flooring and vinyl wood affect flooring. Additionally laminate also deals far better with damp and is considerably more durable than other flooring surfaces that can be used in the kitchen.

Other benefits include click and lock laminate planks, which allows you to lay your own flooring within your kitchen. Its is advisable when doing this to ensure you have purchased a waterproof core flooring to stop damage to your floor if you have any spillages in the home.

With laminate flooring you should certainly consider that you get what you pay for with this flooring. The cheaper the flooring the lower the quality will be. Therefore meaning the less likely it is to resemble to the type of flooring you want and it will generally not last as long.

Vinyl

Known for its durability and ease of cleaning Vinyl flooring offers the perfect solution for a busy kitchen.

Vinyl flooring offers a solution and look suitable to pretty much every other type of flooring currently on the market including tile and wood flooring.

Linoleum

More commonly known ad Lino, Linoleum is a product made from linseed oil, wood flour and cork dust over canvas. Known for its durability against water, heat and scratching, it makes an ideal surface for a high footfall kitchen. Furthermore it also benefits from being leg friendly, with soft under foot properties you will not find your legs getting achy with Linoleum flooring.

Although when considering Linoleum flooring bear in mind that it is less versatile than its vinyl counterparts.

Rubber

Rubber flooring makes the perfect option for Kitchens, due to how resilient and hardwearing it is. Furthermore there are a wide variety of colours and styles that are available when choosing your rubber floorings. Some of these styles included studded flooring or completely smooth flooring. Furthermore there is the option to have pretty much any colour you can think of.

Tile

One of the most common types of flooring that can be found in a kitchen. The two most common types of tile flooring being ceramic and porcelain. Porcelain Tiles are ideal for high traffic areas within the kitchen. This is because they are made of denser clay that is bound together with sand, which gives it more hardwearing properties. There are two different types of porcelain tiles – glazed and non-glazed.

Other types of tile that can be used in a kitchen include:

  • Stone
  • Marble
  • Limestone
  • Quarry Tiles
  • Granite
  • Burnished Terracotta

Concrete

Simple yet stylish if utilised correctly, concrete flooring is possibly the most durable type of flooring we have on our list. Capable of withstanding high levels of abuse it is the perfect flooring for people with pets and children. The surface is easily cleanable and water resistant. Although one thing to bear in mind with concrete is that it is very hard so caution should be taken with children.

Concrete is known for its ability to absorb natural heat which will help reduce your energy bills, while helping to maintain warmth within your house. Concrete also come with a large variety of choices on the finish it needs. This can be anything from a coloured dye to a textured look. Your imagination is really your boundary with concrete.

How to Add Value to your Cheshire Home

Ever wondered what you could do to add value to your home? Well this is a common question that many homeowners have and here at Mayfair Kitchens, we’ll give you some insights into how you can add that extra value to your home. Whatever your reason maybe for wanting to upgrade your home, there are some distinct changes you can make to fully maximise on the potential of your home.

So why is a home renovation important?

Whether you’re looking to sell or stay, every home has an opportunity to further reach its maximum potential. And in today’s market where prices are constantly fluctuating, there’s really no way of indicating how the market will react. Which is why renovating your home is a prime investment – not only from a value standpoint, but also for your own personal satisfaction.

Here are some prime ways you can add value to your home…

Home Extension

Whether you go sideways or up, a home extension is possibly the most common thing people add to their home.

Now whether it be an extension for a new bedroom, study room or living room, an extension is by far the most value adding modification you can make to your home.

Value aside, you may even find yourself living in your home for quite some time, but always felt that you can get more out of it through an extension. Or even if you don’t quite have the space for it, a conservatory is also a common form of extension that people make.

What ever your reason, there are so many reasons to go for that extension you’ve always wanted. One thing is for sure however, that you must check with your local council whether planning permission is required. Whatever change you have in mind, its definitely worth checking with the local council whether you need their permission. It may also be a nice gesture to let your neighbours know of your extension plans, as a note of goodwill.

The cost of an extension will vary on your requirements and its certainly worth getting quotes from a variety of local builders to see what kind of cost you’ll be working with.

Adding a Bespoke Kitchen

Another common change people make to their home is adding a bespoke kitchen.

You maybe thinking to yourself, how do you know when its time to upgrade your kitchen? Well this is an excellent question, and here at Mayfair Kitchens, its one that is asked very frequently.

Age – This is probably the most common reason why people choose to upgrade their kitchen. If you find that you’re getting bored of seeing the same appliances and granite, then it maybe time for that upgrade you’ve always wanted.

Latest Technology – Have you ever found yourself visiting family or friends and noticing that they have the latest kitchen installed. The look, the feel and the latest technologies have given you a vision that you may have not known existed! So with this in mind, you may feel that its now time to keep up with the latest kitchen designs.

Space – If you have found that your family has grown in recent times, and it’s a constant battle to get things done in the kitchen, then again, it could be time to upgrade that kitchen. A kitchen extension is quite a common upgrade to make and will most definitely add value to your home.

Loft Conversion

Loft conversions are also another excellent way of adding some space and value to your home.

If you’ve found that your loft is currently propping up your extra clutter, then a real valuable change to make is to turn that space into a functional room.

This is a great way of adding another bedroom to the home with an en-suite. And this certainly adds to the overall value of the home.

Again, just as with a conventional home extension it’s definitely worth seeking the local council to see if any planning permissions are required.

Garden/Front Garden Renovation

If you’ve found that Gardening is not quite your thing, but you know your garden needs an overhaul, then maybe its time to call in the professionals.

The one thing people notice immediately once they view your property, is the view of the garden. If the garden looks a mess, then the value of the property in someone’s mind can begin to diminish.

A well maintained garden could prove to really improve the overall look and feel of a home.

And if you find yourself wanting to spend more time in your garden, then this may add value to your life, not just your property. Picking up gardening cannot only be a fun and healthy hobby, but it also adds to the overall feel of your home. So if you’re looking to sell it or not, a well-groomed garden adds to the overall impression of your property.

Having a Vision of What’s Possible

So by now, you had a vision of what’s needed to make your home more valuable in the eyes of a potential buyer or even for yourself.

A home extension, loft conversion, kitchen upgrade, garden upgrade – all of these will add something different to your home. And maybe just what your property needs in terms of breathing a bit of vitality back into it.

Here at Mayfair Kitchens, we are expert kitchen installers for the North West region. So if you’re looking for kitchens, then look no further.

Top Tips For Successful Kitchen Design

A kitchen is a family where meals are prepared and eaten, and family spends meaningful time together. So, it is quite an important room in the house.

If you want to design your kitchen, ensure you have a design that makes it easy to work in the kitchen, prepare meals and also spend quality time with your loved ones.
Here are some tops tips for a successful kitchen design:

Storage

When you have a large or small kitchen, ensure there is adequate storage space. Install cabinets to transform your kitchen into an elegant one. There are many styles and finishes of cabinets that you can opt for, and these will not just supply storage space, but will keep all the pots and pans out of sight, giving your kitchen a neat and organised appearance. And you can keep your things very eloquently neat and stored away in style!

Lighting

It is strange how something as simple as lighting can transform the kitchen into a light, airy and welcoming room. Place lighting strategically and try to get in natural light, as far as possible. Use bright lights near the working areas, while the rest of the kitchen can have soft lighting. If possible, incorporate a skylight to let in the sunshine. But lighting is a great element to think about for successful kitchen design.

Style

Today, you can opt for custom, contemporary, French, traditional or rustic style. It is imperative that you choose one style and then stick to it in terms of décor, appliances, fixtures and finish. It also should complement the rest of the house and be part of the house, rather a standalone room.

Kitchen Triangle

To make working and food preparation easy and convenient, do not forget the kitchen triangle, which refers to the placement of the sink, refrigerator and stove. The triangle facilitates easy and quick movement between these three points in the kitchen, and there should be no obstacle between these points. Make sure the kitchen triangle is designed efficiently to make your life easier in the kitchen.

Other things to think about are the individual components that make up the kitchen, ie, where your dishwasher and sink will be placed. Also, space between the counters need to be considered too, as ideally you do not want to be bumping into corners on every turn.

Designing a great kitchen can be time-consuming. The good news is you can tap on the wealth of experience that Mayfair Kitchen Studio has. We will first understand your needs, and then help you design and choose the perfect kitchen for your needs.

Our bespoke kitchen designs can increase the value of your home and make food preparation a pleasure. Contact us today on 0151 357 4197 and let us help you select the best kitchen design for your needs.
